Tonight, the Jets close out the preseason with a tilt against the Philadelphia Eagles. Don't expect to see the starters out there much if at all. One drive will probably be it.
As a result, Michael Vick will be the NFL's top story in this matchup. For the Jets, guys like Danny Woodhead, Jehuu Caulcrick, Aundrae Allison, Britt Davis, Marcus Henry, Jack Simmons, Kareem Brown, and Kevin Brock will be on display offensively, with virtually all needing to come up big to secure roster spots.
And that's just the offense. Some of the defensive linemen, linebackers, and defensive backs that I mentioned in the roster battles post will be fighting just as hard to be a Jet come Saturday night (cut-down day).
With Vick set to see most of the playing time for the Eagles, defensive players who stand out will likely be given extra credit for corralling a guy who used to be one of the best in the NFL.
However, the number one guy on the spot once again will be Vernon Gholston. He finally made a play last week by drilling David Carr after coming unblocked around he edge. Unfortunately, he hit Carr helmet-to-helmet, and the play was nullified due to the 15-yard penalty. This week, he looks for his first preseason sack that counts.
*It seems like the Brandon Marshall to the Jets hype is dying down. You never know with Mike Tannenbaum, and Marshall fits a major need. At the same time, it appears like the Broncos want LB David Harris AND a top pick. Tannenbaum is scoffing at the proposal, as he should. If the Broncos are intent on getting a player back for this year, then the Jets are out of luck, unless they'll take Vernon Gholston. Kellen Clemens and Brad Smith won't be enough.
